Atkins Wins New Losing Study

In the on-going low carb versus low fat diet war the latest round goes to Atkins or Meditteranean style eating. That’s a link to the Wall Street Journal article on this big diet news. But here, look at this Googliciousness if you want further evidence of this diet news.

Still if you tell someone you’re low carbing or Atkinsing they roll their eyes and figure your gnawing on bloody pig ears.  But be honest we have no right to look down on low carb lifestyles while eating two bags of popcorn with the justification that it’s only 3 points. Neither seem like a great route to dropping el-bees. (I cop to both, sometimes on the same day.) And WW peeps I’ve been there before and will be there again I’m sure. In fact The Core Plan is totally the low carb lifestyle. I just don’t “get” how to do it.

A modern low carb lifestyle is supposed to be about lean meats, vegetables, some dairy, rough grains and fruits. It’s not hacking a summer sausage to the nub with your canine teeth. The phrase low carb or Atkins Diet seems to have a negative connotation despite this new research. So maybe we need to invent a new phrase for it. Instead of low carbing it I’m going to tell people I’m Edging it. (The Edge from U2 is on VH1 right now so that’s what I got.) Yeah, listen up, I’m choosing The Edge right now because of new research and point counting fatigue.

Meanwhile back to the study… The participants were employees of a nuclear research facility in Israel. In Israel lunch is the biggest meal of the day and all the people ate lunch at the center’s cafeteria every day. That meant researchers could offer lunch options that helped the workers stay with their diets for two years. Which also contributed to their success. I can’t help visualizing the Israeli Homer Simpson denied his doughnuts for two years in service to science and nuclear energy.

So Shalom Israeli Homer Simpson for helping me back up my current decision to do The Edge.

P.S. The study also showed men lose faster than women (yawn) and over 2 years they lost about 10 pounds. This makes me mad.. 10 POUNDS??? I’m not going to think about it. On the upside participants weren’t saddled with strict dietary cut backs so hopefully ten pounds isn’t the upper limit on sustainable weight loss, cause crap. How about we just ignore that part of the study and it will go away.

  1. I work for an Israeli company….and I just thought I would let you know that Israel has the MOST AMAZING donut know to man. They are called Soofganiyot. And they put fresh Krispy Kreme donuts to shame. Obviously this company made sure these donuts were not in the cafeteria, because Homer Simpson or not, I think it would take a saint to turn those amazingly moist, powered, soft, sweet delicious things down.

Okay, stopping with the food porn.

  2. at the risk of sounding like a stalker, when I heard this news yesterday about hi-protein diets, I totally thought of this blog…

  3. Kiki says:

    Sweets… now I want one.
    WeightingGame…we’re already stalking you!

  4. noble pig says:

    Oh. I must have one.

  5. All I want to do is lose weight. What can’t I??? O BOTHER!

  6. I have a feeling that I’ll be Edging again in a couple weeks. This latest attempt just isn’t going like I’d hoped.

So I guess I could say I’m Close to the Edge…

  7. Kiki says:

    Hey annb…O Bother is right.

Charlie… you crack me up. And I just got your book and can’t wait to read it.

  8. MizFit says:

I have to add that while I dont know that I could entirely DO IT—I did a monthly column for the Atkins newsletter and it
    totally works.

    I just fear Id rebel.

    hell I KNOW I WOULD.

    Miz.

  9. Nicole says:

I heart carbs. I also heart fat. I suck at both low fat and low carb dieting.

  10. natalie says:

well…i keep thinking about that trip to france i’m doing. i now have 7 weeks plus 2 days. argh. motivation…i need to be motivated!

  11. Kel says:

I’ve never done Atkins, or any other named diet for that
matter. But the only time I was really able to drop
the “el-bees,” as you call them, was when I really cut
back on sugar and white flour goods. Keeping them off is
easier when I stick to limiting sugar and flour goods.

Big problem in America: sugar and white flour is cheap.
So when you are low on cash, you buy what will fill you
up. Hard to stay on track when you’re short on cash.

  12. Kiki says:

Miz Fit – I knew you were a rebel.
Nicole – I sucketh as well. At all of it.
Natalie – You ARE doing it. And we’re all living vicariously through vu.
Kel – That’s the truth on the cost. It’s hard to buy fancy ingredients on a budget I think.

  13. manager mom says:

These studies all piss me off… it’s so boring, but EVERYTHING in moderation, people!

  14. Kiki says:

manager mom – Except for vodka… right? You don’t mean that?

  15. Nicole says:

vodka is the antithesis of moderation.
