It’s Fun to Zumba at the YMCA

18

Since the kiddos are back in school, Kiki and I decided to get back into a regular exercise routine. We’re taking core fitness classes at the Y. Each week, we’re trying something new and we’ll post our review. Last week, we did spinning. This week, we tried Zumba.

zumba

From the YMCA program description, “Zumba is a dynamic and exciting, easy to follow, danced based fitness system designed for everyone! This workout fuses Latin rhythms and international music themes and combines the principles of interval and resistence training to maximize caloric output, fat burning, and total body toning.”

Oh…yeah…I don’t think that’s what Kiki and I were doing.

Just FYI, Kiki wore a big t-shirt and yoga pants. She had a workout wardrobe epiphany half way through, but she’ll talk about that next week. I went with a big t-shirt and shorts. The tight spandex crowd was in full force. We Zumba’ed in the back row, for obvious reasons. Of course, I had the Zumba teacher’s pet in front of me doing all the moves perfectly and cutely and calling out to remind Renee the Zumba Teacher in case she forgot where we were (which she didn’t…brown-noser).

Here’s a snippet of how it went down.

Greta: (as the music starts and we tried to keep up with the sashaying and ball changing) :  Oh boy, I can see this blog post is gonna write itself.

Kiki: (already crumpled over): Oh boy.

Greta: Is that my left foot or my right foot?

Kiki: Are your shins hurting already?

Greta: (inaudible from the panting)

Kiki: Seriously, shin splints.

Greta: Um…I’m trying just not to piddle. There’s a lot of bouncing involved in the Tango.

Kiki: Oh.. I’ve for sure wet myself. And this isn’t Tango it’s Salsa.

Greta: Then I need chips and a margerita.

At this point, I looked over at Kiki just as she was looking over at me. Then came the giggle fits. She said I looked like Master P on Dancing with the Stars. I said she looked like a member of the Ministry of Silly Walks.

Kiki: What’s with your White Man’s Overbite?

Greta: It’s a self-soother.

At this point Zumba Brown-Noser bumped into me. I was stomping when I should have been shimmy-sliding, apparently.

An hour later, Kiki and I managed to avoid strokes and heart attacks and we were done. I thought it was fun. Kiki thought it was fun, but she said she didn’t like being forced to jiggle things she’s been trying to keep still since puberty. Soooo…all in all, we thought it was a great workout and we really liked the instructor. But, I don’t know if we’re going to add that one in every week. It hurts Kiki’s shins and my dignity way too much.

Now, let’s Cha-cha!

I was wondering what zumba is. It popped up on my gym’s schedule and I hadn’t yet been brave enough to pop in.

I’ve always been too nervous to try Zumba because I’m scared of looking silly. But that’s a dumb reason not to do something! Good for you for trying it. :)

I love the way you describe things…I feel like I was there, too!

I am so uncoordinated, I would be so confused the whole class and would probably not get much of a work out. And I would be paranoid that the brown noser would make fun of me. :-)

This is so funny, because last year when I first started blogging, I belonged to a gym and I tried Zumba class. Once. I wrote about it too:
