New Exercise Guidelines from the Federal Government

10

The U.S. Government has issued new exercise guidelines for its citizens. Here’s a look. Essentially the guidelines seem reasonable albeit more exercise than most of us are doing. I’ve copy and pasted the bullet points for you.

Uncle_Sam_1Adults (aged 18–64)

  • Adults should do 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate-intensity, or 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. Aerobic activity should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, preferably spread throughout the week.
  • Additional health benefits are provided by increasing to 5 hours (300 minutes) a week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, or 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination of both.
  • Adults should also do muscle-strengthening activities that involve all major muscle groups performed on 2 or more days per week.

Alrighty.. but see this might be the single most irresponsible thing our government has ever done. By recommending an exercise plan that seems good… the Feds may be insuring that people do the opposite. Confidence in the federal government is in the crapper right now. (In the crapperis a term used by statisticians.) Because of the current credit crunch/home mortgage meltdown/Wall Street death spiral Americans are rightly skeptical about government recommendations. Many of us remember the run on duct tape spawned by the federal government’s recommendation that this might keep us safe from a terror attack. Although having extra duct tape in the home is never a bad thing.

So while I believe the recommendations are good I’m so frustrated with the government right now that I’m half tempted to make a hat out of duct tape and call it a day. The U.S. federal government just isn’t a credible source for advice.

For me MizFit is a credible source of fitness advice SO I’m going to site Miz Fit and Jillian and Bob when it comes to exercise guidelines instead of the feds. If the federal government’s goal is health for it’s citizenry I think it should be fine with the feds if I spread the word but just say it’s a MizFit and The Biggest Loser Training Guideline. Kay? You’re welcome Uncle Sam.

So how many hours of exercise are you getting a week?

P.S. It’s Greta’s Birthday today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRETA!

Our government has guidelines for exercise? Where is my oversight committee?!?!?

In China, I think it is for online video games, after a certain amount of time spent playing, a prompt pops up directing the kid (or adult) to go outside and exercise. If the gamer does not comply the game is programmed to erase all saved progress. In America, this would be the equivalent of our TV exploding during the finale of American Idol.

If I hustle, I get about 4 hours of exercise per week. Not counting time instructing because, for me, that’s mostly pacing and shouting.

    HAAAAAAAPPY BIRTHDAY GRETA!

good god this is all so confusing huh?
what do I actually DO? (thinks and adds numbers) Id say 7 hours a week on the HIGHHIGH end.

    HIGH.

what do I think they fail to clarify? consistency. working out year in year out 30 minutes a day is, IMO, AWESOME AND ENOUGH.

what the goals are. aesthetics? internal health?

I could so ramble forever but my child summons in the form of a whine (sadly not wine).

    Ill be back.

    Happy Birthday Greta!

Even though I know I don’t get enough physical activity for my health I can’t trust the gov’t to decide what is best for me.

    Greta, Happy Birthday!

I’d guess I average four hours a week. Five if I mow the lawn. Six if I decide to weed. Seven if I get on a cleaning frenzy with rockin’ music on. (Which almost never happens.) I’m aiming for a 40 minute walk 6 days a week. But I have a back problem — I can’t get the bed off my back.

now Im thinking the GOVTs guideline for me should be simple:

    workless. workout more.

  8. Happy Birthday Greta!!!! I get atleast 3 hours in a week, though I try for more!
