Home Scale Advantage
Ok…dilemma people. I’m going to Chicago for a b-day weekend w/ my mother. It’s going to be the perfect diet vacation because she has a BMI of like 19 and hates food. She said we can go to the store and buy up Smart Ones. Yes, I’ve come to the point in my life that eating frozen diet meals for 3 days straight is making me giddy.
The dilemma is this. I will be gone on my normal weigh-in day. We’re staying at a friend’s condo and he, of course, owns a scale. I’m afraid to step on it. What if it’s…accurate?? I can’t have THAT!!! Also, what if it’s heavy? OMG, I don’t think my fragile psyche could handle that.
What to do?
I could weigh in 2 days early on my regular scale. But, that wouldn’t account for added weight loss. I could weigh in 2 days late after my Smart Ones/Lean Cuisine/Healthy Choice jag. That might be my best bet. But what if I break down and cheat? I hear Chicago is famous for honeybuns.
What would you do?
Would you step on a foreign scale? Would you skip the weigh in altogether until the following week?
Gah!

I’d step on the scale…but not worry if it’s off. Every scale is different as we all know. And hey – maybe his will be low, then you’ll feel awesome!
If it were me…Weigh yourself before you leave, and when you get back. But I know some folks just can’t do that. I’m a bit of a scale fanatic. It’s just a part of my routine, I don’t let it dominate my life. I just don’t feel *right* if I haven’t checked it. Kinda like brushing my teeth. If you aren’t a scale person, just check it when you get back.
And really? You associate Chicago with honeybuns? What about the OMG pizza?!? (I grew up a mere 50 miles outside of downtown Chi-town. You’re making me hungry thinking of all the grub I love there.)
well you can weigh a weight or something known to get a tare of the scale and then know what your true weight is. know what i mean jelly bean? i’m the boss, applesauce.

I would step on the foreign scale when I first get there having stepped on my own scale before having left. That will give you and idea of how far it is off from your own.
But that is just me. I am obsessed with scale standing. I keep mine in my kitchen.

I would not step on a foreign scale as they are in most
cases not accurate to you. I have done that in the past and just end up PO’d with myself. To me it is not worth the mental aggravation.
Weigh yourself before you leave so you don’t spend the holiday obsessing over the fantasy number…then you can reweigh when you get home to see if chicago agreed with you or not, if you like. Sweetheart, enjoy the break, forget the numbers, be good but you don’t have to be perfect, you know?

WannaB – that’s a great idea
Cathy – that’s what I’d be afraid of too
Cara – thanks
Weigh at home, and then relax. This is a lifetime change in eating, right? A few days is not going to make any long term difference.
That said — there is lots of healthy food to be had here in Chicago — as well as junk. Try the food court at Water Tower Place while shopping — there’s a Cooking Light station that sells great food with all the nutritional value info to calculate points. There are great fish restaurants, sushi bars — just stay away from the deep dish pizza. There’s a Greek diner on every corner where you can get roasted chicken and Greek salads — leave the Smart Ones at home and have fun.
Skip it! Then you could have the joy of two week’s worth of losses, or the ability to blame any one of many events for a lack of losses.

Eh, skip it, or at least wait until you get home – who knows how them furriners calibrate their scales??
Shade and Sweetwater,
K (who still gets pissed that the scale at the Dr.’s office is three pounds heavier than the one at home!)

I say skip it. Even WW used to give out a pass to skip
your weigh in for one week, so it’s not like you’re
totally breaking the rules or anything. Enjoy your
vacation, be smart and then weigh in when you get home.

I say wait until you get back. Knowing you’re going to weigh in may help you stay on track and make healthier choices.
If you set weigh in for after vacation it will provide humiliation driven incentive for you to not cheat.

Skip! Step away from the foreign scale!
I love my sister’s scale because it is so old, and it’s a good 5 pounds off in the direction that I like.
I agree maybe to wait until you get back…hey, can’t hurt anything, right??
