Truvia and Pumpkin Pie

20

pretty-truvia.jpg There’s a new zero calorie sugar substitute on the market called Truvia. It’s made from rebiana which is a part of the stevia leaf. Manufacturers say it’s 200 times sweeter than sugar. Truvia aims to offer a natural alternative to other sugar subsitutes on the market. Truvia sent us a sample since we’re always interested in ZERO CALORIES!

In honor of the Thanksgiving holidayI have a pumpkin pie recipe that works nicely with sugar substitutes. I made one pie with Splenda and the other with Truvia and then unscientifically taste tested them. I have to say the Truvia version won my test. I even gave a piece to one of my pumpkin pie loving kids and they had no idea that it was the Truvia pumpkin pie. So for Thanksgiving if you’re trying to save a calories or watch your sugar I’d recommend the Truvia. Here’s the the Truvia website if you’d like more info on what it is and how it works in baking.  Here’s my pretty little sugar-free pumpkin pie…framed-pie.jpg

Truvia Pumpkin Pie

Preheat the oven to 350. Coat a pumpkin pie pan with non-stick spray.

1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin
3 eggs
20 packets of Truvia sugar substitute
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
3/4 cup cream
1 teaspoon of vanilla

Bake for 30 to 40 Minutes. Serve with a dollup of whipped cream. Moan. And then apply for sainthood because you totally stayed on your diet!

This is a crustless version. I made my pie using Phyllo dough. I layered four sheets on the pie pan and angled them to form a circle. You can also use a regular pie crust. But personally you don’t need a crust I’m a fan of the crustless version.

I plan to continue to experiment with Truvia. Let me know if you’d like to see more with this new sweetener.

That pie looks fantastic! I don’t do artificial sweeteners and I’ve heard about stevia, but I hadn’t heard about Truvia.

  3. This sounds incredible. I know I promised to use butter and salt and sugar and lard as my mother-in-law did in all of her delectable recipes… but I do have adult children who
are all about nutrition and health and marathon-training
    kinds of foods…

… I’m sure Flo wouldn’t mind if I used your recipe just
    this once!
