All Diets Work

doctor_091A new study from the New England Journal of Medicine has determined that if you eat fewer calories you’ll lose weight. {Smacking forehead with hand.} Please read the study here. Here’s the conclusion of a two year study:

Reduced-calorie diets result in clinically meaningful weight loss regardless of which macronutrients they emphasize. Source: New England Journal of Medicine, Comparison of Weight-Loss Diets with Different Compositions of Fat, Protein, and Carbohydrates

That means if you likey the low-carb go for it or if you likey the low-cal go for it. But for the love of grilled-cheese-sandwiches eat less. Yep, that’s the research. Eat fewer calories and you can lose, HOLD THE PHONE,  7-percent of your body fat over two years. {Banging head on kitchen island.} After two years, study participants lost an average of 8 pounds. {Reaches for M&Ms}

So the study tells us to eat less. Gotcha. Here’s what I’m going to take away. We’re all on the right diet. But here’s the interesting thing, study participants who stuck with it and lost the weight were the ones who came to the group sessions offered. So while any lower calorie diet may work they work best with support from other dieters in the same boat. {Screams DUH.}

So let’s say it again, all of our diets will work if we support each other. Either get your morning diet laugh and support here OR tweet it up with us on Twitter. We tweet all day about staying on our diets. This is Rebecca here and this is Robin here. That’s right if we all diet together we’ll be smoking hot in two years. {Starts looking through bikini catalogs that will hold delivery until 2011.}

    Who woulda thought? :) I definitely fall short in the support arena.

  2. It works… calories in… calories out. It’s amazing how you lose the weight if you exercise and eat right.

  3. I’m going to jump in here & say that yes, diets can work in the short-term, but for LASTING results, just “dieting” is not going to do it. Like the study said, one needs to STICK to it. But who can (and wants) to stick to a diet their whole life? Not me.

    So you need to learn how to eat all foods – the good & the “bad” – and include both of them in your diet. Of course, it’s a balancing act :-)

    I also must say that all calories are NOT equal. I’m sorry, but if you eat M&M’s all day and consume 1,000 calories a day you will lose weight, but not for long. Same goes if you ONLY eat carrot sticks all day at 1,000 calories (though that’s almost impossible to do) — you’ll lose weight but won’t keep it off for long. (who the heck wants to live on a diet of carrot sticks anyway?) But I think you get my point.

    So, thought they say dieting works–they also point out you must stick to it. And “dieting” for life is NOT the answer. You need to have a healthy relationship with ALL foods, and learn how to balance the healthy & the “guilty” ones so you can LIVE a happy life. Don’t diet for life.
