Why I Started Gardening Last Year

9

Good naturualists journal their observations about nature, naturally. Here are my thoughts one year ago when I began my first vegetable garden.

The price of every thing is going up. And I like to buy everything. The food crisis and reports of rationing at bulk food superstores are enough portent of doom-wise to fire a low grade panic in this binge eater. (Note from today: What ever happened to that rice crisis? Should we still be worried?)

So to take control of my own family’s destiny and to stave off my post-apocalyptic nightmare anxiety I’m going to grow vegetables. Or I should say that I’m going to TRY to grow vegetables. Usually things grow on my vegetables due to lack of use in my crisper… so this will be a switch. I’m hoping to save money and my entire family through tomato and zucchini.

First up I searched my yard for a spot. I think this is perfect. The garden hose is right there so I won’t have to haul water AND it’s near the kitchen so I can pinch off the herbs and add them right to my Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for that special touch.

Now you may wonder.. what’s that white bag thingy currently acting as a focal point for my future vegetable garden? Jimmy Hoffa? Amelia Earhart? Or the Christmas Tree? Yeah it’s the Christmas Tree. Before I can dig out a garden in this perfect spot I either have to take the tree to the recycle place, the Island of Misfit Toys, or just spray it with Rustoleum and use it next year.

And that garbage can? I don’t know what’s in it and I am afraid to open it. But try to throw away a garbage can. You can’t.

Garden experts recommend that you keep a log as you work in the dirt. So welcome to the dirty little log of this Virgin Garden(er.) And since this a diet blog I think it fits in because I’m growing veggies, they’re zero points PLUS it’s like physical labor right? Win-win.

Note from today: I’m doing it again. That’s right my Very Second Vegetable Garden begins next week. I know, run and get a container for your extra joy at the news.

I miss having a veggie garden! The memories of going out to the garden with mom when I was growing up are some of my fondest! She used to pay me a penny per bug to go out and pick off all the tomato and potato bugs. Then I’d sit on the cement thingy by the barn and squish them one at a time while counting them….LMAO!

The best part about growing your own veggies is you know what is or isn’t used while growing them. You’ll grow to enjoy it, and each year, your garden will grow a little more as you gain more confidence in your abilities!

Have fun and be sure to take plenty of pictures!!

Good for you for putting in a garden! Just be aware that it will get bigger and bigger every year, until it takes overy your yard and the neighbors won’t talk to you anymore because every time they see you you’re trying to give them another bag of zucchini.

And you’ll never buy another tomato once you taste the ones you grow in your garden. Supermarket tomatoes don’t even deserve to be called tomatoes.

Have fun, and enjoy your new garden!

  3. Gardens scare me. I can’t be talented enough to pull that off.

I have a compost pile this year. It’s compostlicious. I have herbs, berries and veggies out back and flowers out front. ::does the “nicole has a garden dance”::

  5. Aww I totally miss having a garden! I had one for a few years while I was in high school. I enjoyed being able to eat something I grew myself. Good luck with your garden this year!

  6. I’ve had a garden for several years, and right after Christmas,we moved to a log cabin, in the woods, and we just can’t have a garden ready in time. I’m so sad. The most I’m doing this year is some tomatoes on the deck, and that’s about all. I envy you!

if your garden doesn’t work out, I’ll be happy to send you some tomatoes. By August, I can’t give them away!!!

I did a VERY small one pot “garden” with some Romaine lettuce and onions. This year I’m thinking of a couple “pots”. I can’t “bend” and “stoop” to pick, etc. so the one pot idea works so well for me!

This year, tomato plants, lettuce, onions & one pot of just herbs! I’m feeling SO “Farmer Jane”! LOL

i’m so glad to see other “Virgen gardeners” getting started! I’ve started container gardens and they’ve done so well i’m going on to a bigger raised bed garden. WOOHOO!! the power of seeing soemthing grow is contagious!
