High Fructose Corn Syrup, Heat, and Bee Doomsday

5

The philosophy here at Does This Blog Make Us Look Fat World Head Quarters™ is to eat very little sugar. We find we feel better with less sugar in our daily diets. When we do chose sweets we try to go with real sugar, Truvia®, and Splenda®. (None of which are paying us to post but if they’d like to we’d be happy to take cash©.)

We read just enough and diet more than enough to decide to avoid high fructose corn syrup when possible. We want to be smoking hot AND endeavor keep our blood sugar Steady Eddie. We think this helps.

Now comes THIS study* which says if you heat high fructose corn syrup a chemical called hydroxymethylfurfural or HMF forms. Now first of all if you say HI-DROX-EE-METH-ILL-FUR-FUR-ALL you burn 50 calories – so you’re well on your way to your fitness goals of today. But we digress. Here’s the doomsday part (we’re highly plugged in to doomsday and diet news) as quoted from Science Daily:

HFCS can form HMF and kill honeybees. Some researchers believe that HMF may be a factor in Colony Collapse Disorder, a mysterious disease that has killed at least one-third of the honeybee population in the United States.

First of all, whoa. Second, this has re-energized our commitment to real sugar, stevia based sweetners like Truvia®, and Splenda®.  Keeping in mind that we are not doctors it still couldn’t hurt for you to look at the ingredients on your favorite dressing, sauce, or drink, and just check. If you really want to lose weight, you’ve got to watch your ingredients, if it is potentially causing Colony Collapse Disorder that can’t be good. However if you’re scared of getting stung by a bee perhaps you should mix high fructose corn syrup with your tanning oil® next time you sit by the pool?

In honor of our desire not to collapse entire societies while becoming smoking hot click on our Truvia Pumpkin Pie recipe.

  1. I am confused. Bees have all this honey they make. What are they doing eating high fructose corn syrup? Are they actually collecting quarters, not pollen, and taking them to the vending machine to buy soft drinks? And why won’t they drink them cold? It sounds like this magical bee killing substance only forms if you heat it up.
Can I tell my kids they shouldn’t drink soda because it kills bees?

  2. GretaKiki says:

I think you can tell your kids that – yes.

And I think they gave HFCS to bees to have them reproduce more and make more honey. And I’m pretty sure they did give the bees teeny tiny little cans of soft drinks.

See “we’re not a doctor” for why we make no sense.

  3. That’s scary. Companies use HFCS because it’s cheap, not caring about ramifications. So it’s bad for us, bad for environment, perfectly OK for corporations. Why does this not surprise me?
