Back to School Workout

Certainly everyone knows that January 2 at any health club or gym is going to be busy. The first of the new year is the perfect time to lie to yourself that you’re going to work out every day and get in shape.

exercise 2But surprise surprise the other busy day at the health club or gym is the first day of school! Right after the bus picks up the elementary school kids your chance of finding a treadmill is about as good as finding a pair of jeans that fit. A quick survey of people waiting in line for the elliptical machine reveals that most moms and dads decided as soon as the kids went back to school they’d start working out/walking/getting drunk at 11am. (Okay we’re the only ones considering a pre-launch mimosa so that’s your margin of error.)

Where we live –  today is the first day of school.  We and the rest of our BMFs (best mom friends) have committed to having a six pack before teacher conferences roll around. Or maybe we talked about drinking a six pack before we go to teacher conferences.

Either way.. hi there.. welcome to the health club. Did you pack your kid’s lunch or are they buying? Yeah, Mrs. Crabapple is a tough teacher. Uh, could you hurry up I need to get on that treadmill before car pool.

Has anyone else made that back to school workout commitment?

I ordered some new tennis shoes. For some reason I can’t start exercising until I get those shoes. I have some old shoes that work just fine but there’s something about those new shoes that’ll make it all better.

Maybe they’ll come today… or tomorrow… next week? Whenever they show up, I just know they’ll do the trick and I’ll be sporting a six pack before you know it.

Funny, I don’t even have kids, but I was just thinking this morning that now that it’s starting to cool off I should get back in the habit of walking the dog in the mornings. Of course I’d probably get run over by a school bus, so maybe that’s not such a good idea after all…

the fitness center i go to just came out with their new schedule, for the first time in 6 years I have free time to myself so I am going to gentle yoga and maybe a weight lifting class.

  5. YES! I am definitely in the group that wants to hit the workouts now that the kids are finally back in school. Although I would probably rather have the mimosa…LOL
