Bad Dates

Chunky PumpkinThe calendar from now until 2010 is filled with occasions and events that challenge the diet. Days that events, ancient druid tradition, and a brief accord with indigenous people cause even the most committed dieter to eat candy corn until it shoots out your tearducts. But in the belief that red flags help alert people to danger I’m going to list the bad dates that invariably derail my diet or to use the current vernacular challenge my commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Football Friday (and Thursday) – The concession stands have hot dogs, pizza, and candy. All of which I enjoy and everyone else is eating that! Eating BEFORE the game is my only option here.

Everyone’s September Birthday – Happy Birthday to you and you and you. And cake for me and me and me.

October 29th – Purchase the Halloween Candy Thursday. Better get extra just in case. Typically it talks to me from the pantry until I test it. I’m testing it for the safety of all area children, not because I’m cheating. It’s for the kids.

October 31th – One for you Ninja Transformer Football Player, one for you Hannah Twilight Princess, three for me Aging Sandy from Grease.

November 1 AND 3rd - There be extra candy and a birthday here. PLUS I’m already on the bullet train to bulbous.

November 25- The day I pretend I’m Paula Deen. Y’all just love my gooey butter pie cakes with home-made TurkDuckEn and stuffing. I’ll be a cookin’ all day. And a good cook samples – how else you gonna know if it’s good chile?

November 26 – Thanksgiving Day is the day we celebrate how good natured we all are and eat our weight in everything – twice. It’s certainly what the pilgrims had in mind. By mid-day my clothes hurt me.

November 27  to 29th- Oooh! Leftovers.

December- Cookies and parties and gifts oh my! But really the danger zone is December 24,25, and 26th. If I succumb to all the above dates by the time December 31st rolls around so will I. (Be rolling around.)

    I think there’s nary a month in the calendar that we can’t find a “REASON” to eat… instead find reasons to enjoy life, visiting, conversation, keeping busy. No matter what the time of year, we’re going to be able to find a reason to “dignify” a series of bad choices. Instead, I say we find reasons to ignore the food side of this time as much as possible, and when that’s impossible find ways to create BETTER versions of it all!

    We can do it … TOGETHER…. One Day At A Time!!!!!!

    Oh man – I have been dreading most of these dates! Thanks for the harsh reminder that I better be good now because it is all down hill from here!

    In my case I’m in college so you can also add exam stress-related eating, which counts at least as much!

    I actually eat less when I’m cooking all day… Sure there’s sampling going on but I like to cook so much I get wrapped into it and I don’t actually sit down for a meal. So I sample here and there and it keeps me from getting hungry, but I don’t inhale food until I’m stuffed full like I do way to often at meals. Yay cooking!

    July 4th – all those great BBQ dishes are too delicious to resist!

  7. From now til the end of the year is always tough – Holidays wine tastings and lots of comfort food will be on the menu as the weather changes!! Yikes!!
