Golden Dream Barbie Does the Physique 57 Workout DVD

Admittedly my reason for wanting to try the Physique 57 workout (which is Kelly Ripa approved) is delusional. In my head I am Golden Dream Barbie.

Rational Brain: The only thing our DNA has in common with Kelly Ripa’s DNA is that we’re both carbon based. No workout is going to change that Golden Dream Barbie.
Golden Dream Barbie Me: I’m going to do this DVD, eat only salad with no dressing for lunch, and then I will be a size zero with adorable little muscles AND my Barbie Golden Dream Hair. I will also star in Grease with John Travolta.

Regardless I popped in the DVD. To give you a frame of reference of my fitness level, I have been walking and spinning lately so I am “fitesque” in the cardio department but the muscle building and core strength department is non-existant. This workout is not easy. This is good. When a workout DVD is easy on the first try you’ve thrown away your money because if you do it consistently every DVD will get easier. You want it to challenge you. This one does. 

What I liked: Tanya Becker. She created and choreographed the routine and she keeps you focused on why you’re lifting your leg in this strange way. A little “no muffin top” and a reminder that living in my “Fantasy Brain” isn’t going to get me fit but lifting my leg, arms, and butt reapetedly to failure will. When things start burning, and they will in this workout, Becker nudges you a bit. I like hearing that I’m melting stuff. I also like the fact you always have the modification or “easier” version to view. I also like that the “modification workout lady” seems like she thinks this hard too. The 57 minutes goes by pretty quickly. You really do feel like your arms and legs were toned during the workout. I’m worried that I didn’t do enough for my abs but then again I currently can’t find my “abs” so who am I do say? DAY TWO ADDENDUM: THERE’S ENOUGH FOR THE ABS. FOR THE LOVE OF JANE FONDA’S WORKOUT CHALLENGE THERE’S ENOUGH AB STUFF.

What could be improved: A few of the leg movements are very subtle. It’s a difference of lifting up or pushing back or tapping  your leg while it remains in the same position. I felt a little confused on that. I could have used a little more description of direction of the leg movements. That said I’m sure I’ll figure it out with subsequent workouts.  

Rational Brain: I would recommend this video. It is a good workout that gives you a challenge. If you do this consistently and combine it with a sensible diet you very likely will achieve a more toned physique. I believe this video will make you a fan of  this style of total body workout.
Golden Dream Barbie Me: I’m going to New York on my next world tour and when I’m there I’m going to ask the limo driver to drop me off at the Physique 57 Studio. I’m going to be in the actual class and be the best one. I will be wearing adorable little golden yoga pants tiny stretchy top that matches. Isn’t it so cute that my golden hair stays feathered when I work out?
Rational Brain: Oooohkay. That will be super. Now get your XXL T-shirt and ratty sweatpants down to the basement and do that video. Uh hold the butter GDB – you’ve got a little maple syrup on your chin.

    Great review– I’m glad someone else agrees about the lack of cueing in the section with the kickbacks– I really can’t see what’s going on in that portion and feel like I end up only working the standing leg. Other than that, it’s a great video, and I agree that it’s nice to see that the people demonstrating the exercises are obviously having to work hard, too. And I like Tanya’s goofy, zany vibe.

    Nice review — I went to watch the 3.5 minute video of the Classic 57 DVD that your site pointed to, and from what I saw there it’s just a hipper, louder (prettier) revision of Calan Pickeney’s wonderfully affective (and also under 1 hour) CALLENETICS program. Right down to the leg moves, the ab stuff, everything I saw… Also on DVD now, but the book and classes have been around for 20+ years. Hope she’s getting some of the royalties…
    Anyway, good luck with it, we know you’ll keep us posted.
