The Dreaded Doctor’s Office Scale
Has anyone ever put off going to an annual check up w/ their doctor because they didn’t feel like being weighed? {raises hand}
I’ve been avoiding the thyroid doctor for 5 months because of the dreaded scale. But, I went last Friday. I had boots on (knock off Ugg’s).
So here’s the age-old dillema…do I remove my shoes before getting on the scale?
At first blush, there seems like a simple answer. Take my shoes off. I weigh less without my shoes. But, on further analysis, I think the decision is more complex. If I leave my shoes on yes, I”ll weigh more. But, I don’t really know how much my shoes weigh. Therefore, I can keep my “real weight” delusion going. If the scale says one hundred blabety blah, I can tell myself, “Yes, but these boots weight at least twenty pounds. Or…for sure ten.”
Makes sense. Right?
I left my boots on. I was 12 pounds heavier than my last visit 17 months ago. When the doctor reviewed my chart, she raised a brow and said, “Hmm. Looks like you’ve put on a little weight.”
{alarm bells} {panic} {impulse for defensive sarcasm}
The only thing I could muster to say was, “Flip flops!!”
Next time, I’m walking in there naked.

I recently went to my doctor’s office and I weight 10 pounds more than my home scale was reading. Granted, i have a crappy home scale and it is relative. I lost 8 pounds according to the home scale, ergo I lost 8 pounds.

I no longer weigh myself at all, not at home, nor at the doctor’s office. They respect that wish. There may come a time when I decide to get back on the scale, but for now, no scale for me. I am not in denial by any stretch…and there are plenty of other “measurements” of my health.

I know for a fact that the scale in my doctor’s office runs at least 15 pounds high. My digital scale and Wii Fit at home don’t lie.

Whenever I weigh myself with my shoes on, I always announce something like, “OH, my shoes added 5 lbs!” Or if I’m barefoot, I say something like, “My clothes added 7 lbs!” Everyone (me and maybed DH) knows I’m lying, but we’re just cracking jokes.
