Dear Aunt Becky – Pitching an Advice Column


Recently the woman known to millions of readers as Dear Abby died. Pauline Phillips was 94 and wrote Dear Abby for 44 years.

Her sister, Esther (Eppie) Friedman Lederer, known as Ann Landers, also wrote an advice column. She died in 2001.

I’ve been writing this humor column for more than four years and sometimes I can’t think up new funny stuff. So reading about the two women, knowing both wrote down-to-earth advice columns read by millions, I got to thinking. What’s stopping me from being an advice columnist? Plus the advice seekers write the letters. I just pop in with a few pearls. Instant cure for writer’s block is what you got there people.

First, I need a name. Dear Abby was based on Pauline Phillips’ pen name, Abigail Van Buren, “Abigail” was taken from the Old Testament and “Van Buren” was one of her favorite presidents. I’m toying with Ask Aunt Becky, Rebecca Recommends, or Write Rebecca. My mom says I should go with Becky because it’s approachable and the name Rebecca frightens people.
